The Fairless Works was named for Benjamin Franklin Fairless. I began my career there as a laborer in the rod mill in 1974, one of 8,000 or so steel workers during peak production. A 65" Hot-dip galvanizing line remains as the Mon Vally Works.

His old job was hard, but this one is a killer. Vandegrift is a counselor in a dislocated workers center, helping nearly 2,000 men and women who made steel in a cauldron of filth and fire try to negotiate the life after. Read more

This rod mill 4 strands rolling is like the mill I worked at the Fairless Works.
